The 1st international Symposium on Biothermodynamics takes place from 16 to 17 February 2006 at DECHEMA in Frankfurt am Main, Theodor-Heuss-Allee 25. This call for paper is oriented towards engineers, biotechnologists and thermodynamics specialists from both research and industry.
Abstracts can be submitted by file upload at the website http://events.dechema.de/Biothermodynamics until September 26, 2005.
The key topics of the symposium are:
Estimation and modeling of thermodynamic material data, Protein adsorption on surfaces, Protein interactions and stability, Interaction of kinetics and thermodynamics in bioprocesses, Biocalorimetry, Utilization of non-natural energy-rich substrates, Equilibrium in complex biological systems, Thermodynamics of metabolic pathways and of downstream processing in biotechnology.
Biotechnological processes are still, to a great extent, designed regardless of thermodynamic fundamentals and are based on kinetic approaches, empirical rules and experience. However, as a method to describe conditions and processes of complex systems, thermodynamics offers an excellent tool to supplement kinetic and stoichiometric approaches, experience and intuition by well-founded scientific rules.
