Functional Genomics and Proteomics - Applications, Molecular Diagnostics & Next Generation Sequencing, 02.-03. Februar 2012, Frankfurt2011 has been an exciting year in -omics – and 2012 promises the same. Use the opportunity to meet and discuss latest trends at the Functional Genomics and Proteomics seminar! An attractive lecture and poster program will highlight new developments in applications, advances in molecular diagnostics and latest trends in next generation sequencing. Plenary lectures given by J. Walter and I. Gut will focus on the dynamic of epigenomic landscapes and on high resolution whole genome analysis.
“Systems Biology – Fact or Fiction?” is the somewhat provocative title of a panel discussion featuring R. Balling, J.D. Hoheisel, S. Neumann and T. Werner and hosted by M. Hrabĕ de Angelis. A poster party and an extensive exhibition will provide further food for thought and discussion.

Synthetic DNA: Writing with the letters of life, January 24th, 2012DNA strands of megabasepair size stand for a revolution in biotechnology. Genes and gene clusters, even artificial chromosomes and viral and bacterial genomes can be sythesized today. The potential for biological research, biomedicine, and biotechnology appears to be boundless: tedious procedures of genetic engineering are becoming obsolete and the programming of cells, e.g. for the rational design of biosynthetic pathways, is tremendously facilitated. Moreover, the de novo construction of complete micro-organisms – already technically feasible – should come within reach. At 'Synthetic DNA: Writing with the letters of life' (Frankfurt am Main, 24 January 2012) pioneers of the field – John Glass (J Craig Venter Institute), Jutta Heim (Evolva SA), Emily LeProust (Agilent), Philippe Marlière (Heurisko), Chris Voigt (MIT), Ralf Wagner (Life Technologies), and Eckhard Wimmer (Stony Brook) – will present latest technological advances as well as the fascinating projects and perspectives.

European joint conferences on chemical engineering and biotechnology in Berlin end on an upbeat noteThe 8th European Congress of Chemical Engineering and 1st European Congress of Applied Biotechnology closed on Thursday in Berlin on an upbeat note. For four days, about 3,000 scientists from industry and academia discussed topics from research and practical application. Especially the lectures on downstream processing of biotechnological products were strongly frequented; interest in sessions on energy storage, future thinking in innovation and process intensification were also received with great interest.

Booming Security Innovations for the Process IndustryStuxnet and other cyber attacks targeting company networks or industrial plants have caused alarm bells to ring in the chemical industry: the very complexity of modern chemical plants makes them increasingly vulnerable both to acts of sabotage and to potential system errors. The current spiralling demand for innovative security concepts hardly comes as a surprise – clearly visible already now through significantly increasing booking figures at ACHEMA 2012 in the Control and Automation Group which will showcase the latest innovations in this field.
